From November 26th to 30th, 2025, Urgent Action Fund–Africa (UAF-Africa) brought its flagship political and movement-building initiative to the coast, hosting the 3rd Feminist Republik Festival at the iconic Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort & Spa in Mombasa. Convened under the powerful theme, "Regenerating in Crisis: Grounding Healing and Care in the Storm," this monumental festival gathered over 600 African women’s human rights defenders (AWHRDs), activists, and gender-justice leaders from across the globe. Set against the tranquil backdrop of the Indian Ocean, the festival intentionally shifted away from traditional, rigid conference formats to co-create a deeply political space centered on radical collective care and wellness. Recognizing the intense exhaustion, trauma, and burnout experienced by activists operating on the front lines of intersecting global crises, the 40-county pan-African gathering served as a safe haven to pause, grieve, celebrate, and strategize. The four-day residency blended thought leadership with a diverse tapestry of healing modalities. Attendees engaged in multilingual strategic dialogues across Francophone and Anglophone divides, unpacked the realities of feminist responses to crisis, and actively engaged in indigenous African healing practices. Through a vibrant curation of somatic bodywork, traditional medicine, art therapy, storytelling, and dance, the 3rd Feminist Republik Festival redefined what sustainable activism looks like—reaffirming that collective care and well-being are not luxuries, but foundational political strategies for enduring resistance and liberation.
